2018 Preview - Which crochet and knitting trends will be popular next year?

Hello, 2017 has been about messy bun hats, pom poms and anything to do with unicorns.  In this post I am looking at which yarn trends may be popular next year, and some of the projects I am hoping to make.

Garments - Knitted or crocheted over sized jumpers and cardigans have been so popular this year, and they look set to continue their popularity next year but with the addition of belts, ties and fringing.

Fringing - Fringing can be added to scarfs and shawls but in 2018, long fringing looks set to be added to everything from bags to jumpers. I found many ideas on Pinterest.

Netted/Market bags - These are predicted to be a big trend in 2018. This is something that can be crocheted and made in many different sizes and colours.  The pattern below would make a great bag for storing your yarny projects.

Colourwork - I am going to try to find some time to practice my knitting this year.  Colourwork yoke knitwear is a massive trend at the moment.  I absolutely love this Damejakke Loppa pattern from Pinneguri but I think I need a lot more practice before starting a garment like this.

Socks - Knitted socks have been everywhere this year and that should continue in 2018.  There are many groups on Ravelry for sock alongs, where members make 12 socks during a year. I am going to start my Wool and the gang socks in the New Year.

Crocheting that looks like knitting - Another trend that looks set to continue into the New Year is crocheting techniques that look like knitting.

Tunisian Crochet - I have just recently learnt the basics of Tunisian crochet and I love it.  Looking forward to learning more about this style of crochet.  We have a pattern coming out soon for Kip the Koala bear...

Solar System Blanket - I really want to design and make a solar system blanket for my youngest son, Oliver.  He loves planets and the dwarf planets, I have a few drawings and ideas but have not started crocheting it yet.

New doll - Ali Crafts has been busy designing the most amazing new doll. I think she could be the best yet and I can't wait to start testing the pattern.  More photographs coming soon.

Doilies - Possibly a bit of an out there prediction, but I think traditional crochet doilies could make a come back with a more modern twist. Different yarns, hook sizes, bright colours and framing these doilies could make them more modern.

Happy New Year and let me know your thoughts about what will be popular next year,
